Beef Operation

Beef is a key component of NBPOL’s diversified agribusiness portfolio and contributes directly to national food security in Papua New Guinea.

NBPOL is Papua New Guinea’s largest beef producer, supplying the domestic market through two complementary cattle operations:

  • Ramu Premium Beef: Large‑scale commercial cattle production in the Markham grasslands
  • Numundo Beef: Integrated cattle farming within oil palm estates in West New Britain

Together, these operations strengthen supply resilience, optimise land use and support sustainable, locally produced protein for the PNG market.

Ramu Premium Beef – Markham Grasslands

Ramu Premium Beef is NBPOL’s primary commercial beef operation, based in the Markham Valley.

Key features:

  • Herd of approximately 22,500 head of cattle
  • Around 10,000 breeding females, producing over 6,000 calves annually
  • Pasture‑based grazing system adapted to PNG conditions
  • Strong focus on animal welfare, herd health and productivity

Ramu Premium Beef supplies approximately 2.5 million kilograms of beef annually to the domestic PNG market.

Numundo Beef – Integrated Cattle & Oil Palm System

Numundo Beef operates as an integrated cattle farming system within NBPOL’s oil palm estates in West New Britain.

This model allows:

  • Productive use of under‑canopy and estate grassland areas
  • Integration of cattle grazing with plantation operations
  • Improved land‑use efficiency and soil management

Numundo Beef complements NBPOL’s palm oil operations by supporting circular agriculture practices, while supplying beef to local markets.

Integrated and Sustainable Feed Management

Across both Ramu and Numundo operations, cattle are fed a locally sourced, natural feed mix, including:

  • Palm kernel expeller from NBPOL’s palm oil mills
  • Molasses from NBPOL’s sugar operations
  • Silage produced from pasture grasses, sorghum and sugar graze

NBPOL maintains long‑term silage reserves through annual forage planting and harvesting, ensuring feed security during droughts and extreme weather events.

This integrated approach allows beef production to remain consistently PNG‑made, regardless of climatic conditions.

Processing and Food Safety

All beef is processed at NBPOL’s Gusap and Numundo abattoir, in accordance with applicable food safety and quality standards.

Beef products are supplied:

  • Directly from the abattoir
  • Through domestic supermarkets
  • To food service and hospitality customers
