Our Workforce

Our people are central to NBPOL’s operations and long‑term success. The majority of our workforce is locally employed, reflecting our commitment to national employment, skills development and community participation across Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands.

In addition to our permanent workforce, NBPOL employs apprentices under structured trade qualification schemes, as well as seasonal workers engaged for specific projects and peak operational periods. This workforce model supports operational flexibility while creating pathways for skills transfer and employment continuity.

Human Capital Development

NBPOL is committed to building capability across all levels of the organisation — from field operations to senior leadership. Our people development approach focuses on "structured training, succession planning and internal progression" (bold this), aligned with SD Guthrie Group standards.

Our talent management strategy applies consistently across our operations, supporting skills development, leadership readiness and long‑term career growth.

NBPOL Management Training Academy

Established in 2017, the NBPOL Management Training Academy plays a central role in developing leadership capability across the organisation.

The Academy delivers:

  • Leadership and management development programmes
  • Technical training covering palm oil field and mill operations
  • Sustainability and responsible operations training
  • Logistics and operational management courses

The facility is equipped with classrooms, a library, accommodation and supporting infrastructure. A dedicated Talent Council identifies high‑potential employees and supports targeted mentoring and development pathways.

Cadet Training Programme

NBPOL operates a structured Cadet Training Programme for both estate and mill to develop future plantation leaders.

The programme is open to selected internal employees as well as fresh graduates, providing a clear entry pathway into plantation management careers.

Participants undergo a comprehensive development programme combining:

  • Classroom‑based theoretical training
  • On‑the‑job learning and estate rotations
  • Performance assessments and practical projects

The programme is designed to fast‑track capable candidates into assistant manager roles, subject to performance and operational requirements.
