Certification & Recognition

Certification & Recognition

Our Commitment to Standards & Assurance

Certification to recognised international standards is integral to how New Britain Palm Oil Limited (NBPOL) operates. Our approach to certification supports responsible production, strengthens stakeholder confidence and ensures our operations meet evolving regulatory, customer and sustainability expectations.

NBPOL’s certification framework is aligned with SD Guthrie Group standards, with local implementation across our operations in Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands.

Sustainability Certifications

Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO)
NBPOL was among the first companies globally to achieve certification under the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) in 2008. By 2012, all operating sites were fully certified to RSPO Principles and Criteria (P&C), including associated smallholders.

RSPO compliance is regarded as a minimum operational standard at NBPOL. Through structured support programmes and certification pathways, we have enabled the inclusion of smallholder suppliers within a fully segregated and traceable palm oil supply chain.

Food Safety & Product Integrity

Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP)
NBPOL is certified to Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) standards, reinforcing our commitment to food safety and quality management across processing and storage facilities.

As part of our food safety strategy, NBPOL implemented HACCP (MS 1480) certification across mills, kernel crushing plants and bulk oil storage terminals. Initial certification was completed in West New Britain in 2022, with facilities receiving three‑year certification following successful audits.

Subsequent certification phases extended HACCP implementation across remaining facilities in Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, supporting consistent food safety standards across all palm oil operations.

Halal and Kosher Certification
NBPOL holds Halal and Kosher certifications for selected products and facilities, ensuring compliance with relevant religious requirements governing raw materials, processing methods, equipment and handling practices.

These certifications support access to diverse markets and reinforce consumer confidence in product integrity.

Social & Ethical Standards

SA8000
NBPOL aligns its labour and workplace practices with SA8000, an international social accountability standard addressing:

  • Prohibition of forced and child labour
  • Occupational health and safety
  • Freedom of association and collective bargaining
  • Non‑discrimination and fair disciplinary practices
  • Working hours, remuneration and management systems

Supplier Ethical Data Exchange (SEDEX)
NBPOL participates in the Supplier Ethical Data Exchange (SEDEX), supporting transparency and continuous improvement in ethical supply chain practices.

While local market demand for certification of beef and sugar products is limited, NBPOL applies a consistent integrated management system aligned with ISO 14001, ISO 45001 and SA8000 principles across all commodities and operating sites.

There is little to no demand for our beef and sugar production to be certified to any standard for the local market. However, our sustainable integrated management system was developed against ISO14001, ISO45001 and SA8000 standards and applies to all sites and commodities.

Recognition & Achievements

Sustainable Palm Oil Transparency Toolkit (SPOTT)
NBPOL participated in annual assessments under the Sustainable Palm Oil Transparency Toolkit (SPOTT), developed by the Zoological Society of London.

In 2020, NBPOL ranked first among 100 global companies, achieving a score of 94.4% for transparency across environmental, social and governance disclosures. From 2021 onwards, SPOTT assessments have been conducted at the SD Guthrie Group level.

Sustainable Pathfinder Award
In 2018, the Rainforest Alliance recognised NBPOL with the Sustainable Pathfinder Award for leadership in responsible palm oil production.

This marked the first time the award was presented to a company in the palm oil sector, recognising NBPOL’s contribution to advancing sustainable agricultural practices.
